Sette anni dopo aver attraversato il Mediterraneo alla ricerca di un futuro in Europa, Bourgeois vive a Parigi sospeso in una vita che non è mai davvero cominciata, mentre Kader torna in Costa d’Avorio dopo la morte del padre. Due giovani africani, due percorsi opposti, un’unica condizione: essere diventati stranieri sia nel luogo da cui sono partiti sia in quello in cui sono arrivati.
Seven years after crossing the Mediterranean in search of a future in Europe, Bourgeois lives in Paris suspended in a life that never truly began, while Kader returns to Côte d’Ivoire after his father’s death. Two young African men, two opposite journeys, and the same condition: they have become strangers both in the place they left behind and in the place they arrived in.
CONCEPT
Lo Straniero nasce dall’esigenza di raccontare ciò che accade dopo la migrazione, quando il viaggio è finito ma la ricerca di un luogo a cui appartenere è ancora aperta. Il film osserva due giovani uomini africani che, a distanza di sette anni dalla partenza, si trovano entrambi davanti alla stessa domanda: dove è possibile sentirsi davvero a casa quando il ritorno non è più possibile e l’arrivo non ha mai significato una piena appartenenza?
Attraverso i percorsi paralleli di Bourgeois e Kader, il film indaga la distanza tra le aspettative con cui si parte e la realtà che si trova al termine del viaggio. Parigi e la Costa d’Avorio diventano due luoghi speculari di una stessa condizione: da una parte l’estraneità di chi non è mai riuscito a sentirsi pienamente parte della società in cui vive, dall’altra quella di chi torna e scopre di non appartenere più completamente al luogo da cui era partito. La migrazione diventa così non soltanto un’esperienza geografica, ma una frattura interiore, un passaggio irreversibile che costringe a ridefinire la propria identità.
The Stranger stems from the need to explore what happens after migration, when the journey is over but the search for a place to belong is still unresolved. The film observes two young African men who, seven years after leaving home, are confronted with the same question: where can one truly feel at home when going back is no longer possible and arriving has never meant fully belonging?
Through Bourgeois and Kader’s parallel journeys, the film explores the distance between the expectations with which one leaves and the reality found at the end of the journey. Paris and Côte d’Ivoire become two mirror images of the same condition: on one side, the alienation of someone who has never managed to fully belong to the society in which he lives; on the other, that of someone who returns only to discover that he no longer completely belongs to the place he once left behind. Migration thus becomes not only a geographical experience, but an inner rupture, an irreversible passage that forces one to redefine one’s identity.
