CONCEPT
Mister Mallaby nasce da una domanda semplice e allo stesso tempo enorme: chi era davvero mio padre? Richard "Vaky" Mallaby, direttore della fotografia a Milano, scopre per caso alcuni quaderni e manoscritti appartenuti al padre Dick, ufficiale britannico scomparso dieci anni prima. Tra quelle pagine, elenchi, nomi, indicazioni geografiche, e un piccolo libro misterioso: il diario di Dick Mallaby.
Da lì prende avvio una ricerca durata un decennio, che intreccia la storia privata di un padre e di un figlio con uno dei capitoli più delicati della Seconda Guerra Mondiale: le operazioni segrete degli agenti alleati in Italia. Il film si muove tra archivi, ricordi e luoghi, interrogando cosa significhi ricostruire l'identità di chi non c'è più, e quali conseguenze lasci la guerra su chi resta, anche a distanza di generazioni.
Mister Mallaby stems from a question that is simple and immense at once: who was my father, really? Richard "Vaky" Mallaby, a cinematographer based in Milan, stumbles upon a set of notebooks and manuscripts belonging to his father Dick, a British officer who had passed away ten years earlier. Among those pages, lists, names, geographical indications, and a strange little book: the diary of Dick Mallaby.
What follows is a decade-long search that weaves the private story of a father and a son together with one of the most delicate chapters of the Second World War: the secret operations of the Allied agents in Italy. The film moves between archives, memories and places, questioning what it means to reconstruct the identity of someone no longer here, and what consequences war leaves on those who remain, even generations later.
